Lovely to receive some copies today of a recent project I worked on for @standaard_uitgeverij - board books and activity / sticker books! So nice to see my characters appear in ‘real life’ when printed!

A much needed boost today after months of health problems and major surgery booked for Monday, hence the lack of sharing new things on here. Praying the doctors can fix me and I can get back to drawing and creating more soon. In the mean time, sending lots of love to anyone else who is struggling with physical or mental health issues on this World Mental Health Day, keep going, keep talking and stay strong, who knows what tomorrow will bring ❤️

So lovely to see all of the wonderful #folktaleweek art fill up my feed this Monday with the first prompt MIST.

I’m hoping to do all 7 prompts if I can. After a wonderful zoom call with @sarahdyer_illustrator and Andrew McMillan on Sarah’s Patreon (which is brilliant btw if you’re not part of it yet) I have some short sentences to accompany my images after using some of Andrew’s brilliant and fun techniques to get us writing and thinking about the words differently. I also loved the idea Sarah suggested for her own work this week, which was to use a simpler monotone palette with a touch of colour. It takes me a long time to create final artwork so thought this would be a nice way of working to try out. With both Sarah and Andrew as sources of inspiration this week, it’s helped me think differently about Folktale week and I’ve found it much more digestible and less daunting! A challenging week as always though, hoping to get them all shared. Hope those taking part are enjoying themselves 👩‍🎨 👨‍🎨

I love the @makeartthatsells Illustrating Children’s Book course taught by @lillarogers and @zoe_tucker_design and have taken it many times. It’s so fun to create new characters and it’s a great way to make new portfolio pieces - I learn so much each time. I chose the story about a little girl and her dragon. Meet Ren and Lemon! 30 years ago today, 1st May, the legend that was Ayrton Senna was killed after his car crashed, while he was leading the 1994 San Marino Grand Prix in Italy. These pieces are from a personal non-fiction project of mine about Senna and his life. Another project which I’d like to work more on! This is a piece I recently created for the Penguin Cover Design Award, it was a different way of working for me and I really enjoyed the process and the book is a great read! I didn’t make the shortlist but still really enjoyed creating this piece for my portfolio and now working on some character development to go alongside it for the main character. Another fun @makeartthatsells quarterly art challenge #MATSArtChallenge to draw a vintage #sewingmachine I decided to approach the challenge thinking about a ‘How to Sew’ guide for kids and had lots of fun creating the book cover! I always enjoyed sewing with my Grandma as a kid after school, we made cushions, peg dolls and animals! Anyone else loved sewing as a child or now as a grown up? Something I wish I had more time for! 🧵 🪡
